King Tut XL

A Teletext picture for Flashparty 2025 in Buenos Aires, ranked 2nd place in the Teletext competition. A tribute to pixel art pioneer Avril Harrison who painted one of the most iconic images that showcased the graphical capabilities of the Amiga.

It’s called “King Tut XL” because the pixels are way bigger than the original – and to celebrate 40 years of Amiga, as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. :)

Here’s a little making-of video:

The first half was done in Photoshop with a 2×3 pixel grid overlay and a lot of assumptions like “If I leave room for a color change here, this should work in Teletext”. The rest was done under actual constraints in ZXGuesser’s Teletext editor. (This link also contains the page source.)

While working with the reference pixels, I noticed two things I didn’t know (or misremembered). For one, the original artwork isn’t very symmetrical. Not only the reflections, of course, but also those ears! Once you see it…

Then, the jaw isn’t as narrow as I thought. At least didn’t remember the intricate “env-mapping” reflections on the cheeks which had blurred into the background in my mental image:

Cheeky! :)
